Ask them to declare the price at which they bought your debts.
Current industry standard is 2 cents to 5 cents per dollar, some says 35cents but only if it's six month old debt, so negotiate with them at this rate, I worked four 8 weeks in this industry I know for sure when I settling debts at WIN-WIN situation they fired me.
So simple math is $2-$5 per $100.
So if it's $500 they buy for $10-$50 depending on how old is the debt, since they are in business too so offer them max of $100 for $500 and get them to send an email to confirm that once you pay that they will clear the debt.
Thanks
James

Guys there have been discussion going on to pass a bill to force the debt agency to declare the price at what they bought the debt from client. Since they bought the debt at couple of cents per dollar ( they pay $2-$5 per $100) debt and demand you to pay full money in reality it's the bank who lost the money, the bank give the money to you and not debt agency. Yes bank/financial institution don't want the mess they just wants the cream work so they sell these debts without providing serious help and support, at the moment they just give you option of hardship or bankruptcy.
Debt agency needs to declare at what price they bought the debts but they should be allowed to collect full money but it's depends on customer whether they want to pay or not in full. Since bank don't want mess they created this debt agency but there model is flawed.
Debt agency business model is like going to scrap yard, they buy scrap BMW at scrap price get the last owner details , bring them home do a little bit of cleaning and then call the owner and say hey mate I got your BMW I bought it from scrap yard and now you need to pay $56,000 as this is the current market price of this model of BMW, can you tell me when and how you going to pay if you don't pay today I will start charging interest on it.
Debt agency model is like that bullsh*t.
Please circulate this message along all so everyone can be aware of this and when debt agency call ask them to provide receipt of how much they paid for your debt.
I will be putting in all posts that I come across.
Thanks
James

Got a call from this number 1800 708 124) today, 26th Feb, 2016, asking my neighbour to contact them. The person gave his name as Ben from a "financial services company" in Brisbane(?) maybe. He had the temerity/audacity to ask me to pass on a message to the neighbour to contact them. He refused to name his organization.
I accidentally mentioned I had seen the neighbour yesterday.
They have the address already so why on earth don't they just write a letter to the person?
I'm not going to help them despite the possibility of a debt owing.
I don't even know if it's a debt collection agency - it could be anything.

I no longer answer the phone but keep it on the answer machine so I don t have to deal with these calls which have nothing to do with me.Anyone who want to speak to me is at liberty to leave a message.Just now I had a neighbour visit who had been disturbed while having a nap with a phone call asking her if my son lived here. She brought a phone number to ring for me to pass on to my son which turns out to be this finance company of dubious practices.I am now expecting they will contact more neighbours trying to get information and ask them to bring messages to me.

Further to earlier comment re text like messages appearing on modem. Telstra advised that I do not have ANY debt with them and to delete the texts. Also advised that any outstanding bills will come from them not Lion Finance. Funnily enough I / we have no other outstanding debts!!!
So either they can not do their legitimate work themselves e.g. "Can you drop a line in your neighbors mailbox for us cause they owe someone cash?" or they are generally just full of crap!

We obtained a modem from Telstra (obviously it has it's own number) for Wi-Fi through the house. The equivalent of text messages has been appearing on this "number" since December. Called the number today and spoke to Connie (refused to give any further information) who wanted OUR details. Shock horror not going to happen.
Considering I have no idea who or what they are chasing I'll be sticking with deleting the messages and seeing if I can get some info out of Telstra.

Keep getting calls from them on a private number so I installed an app that blocks all private numbers. They can go f*ck themselves. Good luck finding me. Ha ha ha ha.

They Called my work today in regards to another worker asking to speak with her, I told the lady she wasn't in today, then she asked for her number and asked how many days she works a week..... I said I can't give that information out , could barely understand a single word she spoke, like get some people who can fluently speak proper English for goodness sake. The lady from the debt collection place also asked when she will be in and kept pushing for me to get her number. I can't believe it. I really despise debt collectors. I use to work for one and let me tell you the workers are just trying so hard to meet debt targets they do not care if they are being very rude and pushy after you said no, and it's honestly like a sweat shop if you can't meet the debt target well your out of a job.

This company has been harassing my 90y.o grandparents for a debt they have never had. They are claiming that my grandparents owe a significant amount to Telstra. My grandparents have never been with Telstra. My grandparents are extremely distressed after each contact with this disgraceful company.
To anyone who is being contacted by them, please be wary of them.
Anyone with any decency would know better than to pick on the very elderly and vulnerable. But I guess how else are these scammers meant to make their money? Disgraceful.

I have just been cold-called by these people to 'write a note' and 'drop it into my neighbour's mailbox'. My neighbour is seemingly one of their clients.
They first asked whether they had called the right street, asking what street I lived on. Then they asked me to write a note 'to drop into my neighbour's mailbox'. The house number they said was 10 doors away. After this, they said they were a financial Services Agency.
I don't know the person living 10 doors away from me. I certainly don't want to scare, or be seen to be harassing them.
I googled the number they left and came to this list.

Hello, I have been getting calls from this mob for over 12 months, not for me but for my son. He has told me that he had paid them the debt in August last year and they said it was finalised, however now they want more. I have told them that I am willing to pay the debt and whilst I understand they cant give me any information, then the debt will not be paid. Today they have contacted me again and have said they will give me an amount to pay, but wont give me a receipt or tell me in writing that the debt is paid and the matter closed. I hate getting these calls and I hate that my son has this o/s debt, but really dont know what should happen here. They want me to give them his email and address, at which I havent given either as I feel that he hasnt given me authorisation to do that, so like they dont have his authorisation to send me anything, I dont have his authorisation to give them any details. So what should we do?

My very elderly neighbour has dementia. He was called by Lion to pass a message on to me as he has a similar street number. Which he did, the poor man visited our house twice late at night (he has no concept of time any more). He was very very confused, anxious and distessed. Wow, using the vulnerable and elderly to do their work for them, it's pretty low. Good job the old boy doesn't have the Internet, as a quick google search of the phone number they left with him would have established it was Lion, and what they do .... And bang, there goes my privacy. And before any of the Lion scum suggests "pay and we will leave you alone"... No, I utterly dispute your bought debt, but I'm not giving you the staisfaction of a verified ID. That will not happen.
