Ok, following up on my previous comment; I've ascertained 100% (to myself) that this number *is* legitimate.
I called FedEx Customer Service (13 26 10) and was firstly told to expect an e-mail, that didn't eventuate so I rang back (it is Christmas eve in Australia, the 23rd in the US) and was told the Customs and Billing Department would return my call, they did, and after ascertaining that the GST charges and Electronic Import fee were correct and legitimate (the vendor had valued the book at $1500US, which is a separate issue) by having them e-mail an official invoice and doing the maths, I paid via credit card and received an official receipt.
Both the invoice and the receipt came from legitimate addresses and have all the correct hallmarks and security protocols, the only odd aspect is the phone number, which was difficult, but not impossible to verify as coming from FedEx themselves.
I imagine it's not easily available as it is an Expedited Service Number which is open to abuse vectors, not the least of which being folks skipping the queue on the Customer Service line by calling this one - they are able to transfer you between departments.

The operators had thick accents, but not all of the same origin, and *loads* of call centres are run from India, Phillipines, and other parts of Asia, so this isn't really a red flag anymore, tho I am not by any means suggesting the other activity on the matter shouldn't be investigated, this did appear suspicious, but the accents are the least of my concerns.

It's Duty, GST and an $88AU Import Fee in my case, and from what I can ascertain, is applicable to orders over $1000 (denomination unknown).

I find this highly offensive, but it's really an issue with Australian Customs, Border Force, Home Affairs Office and the Federal Government so if you ignore it, the package will simply be returned to the sender and the process repeated, assuming you want the package, address the issue, even if you take the thirteen hour route I did to ascertain it's veracity.

Dodgy practises either way, but in a hostage situation there are only two viable outcomes.

They purport to be FedEx and the tracking number does appear to annotate my parcel's delivery schedule, however, I have already paid $417+ to FedEx and adding these charges puts the cost up to almost $1000AU for shipping.

Checking the tracking number (by physically copying it in) on FedEx's website confirms the package was held up for Clearance, but also states that no action be taken (it was also stopped due to no Commercial Invoice).

Could be that someone has the infornation and is extorting extra funds on packages that are still to arrive, could be it is actually FedEx.
It was after 10pm here and very few FedEx centres are open, certainly not the pertinent one.

I will retrieve information from the sender, and call official numbers (best check those too) in the morning to ascertain whether we're going to court or not, regardless of the legitimacy of the message, $1000AU for shipping a book is criminal (check with ACCC & ASIC)

I received the below text message while waiting on a package from the US. I also initially though it was a scam, but after spending 3 hours on the phone I discovered it's legitimate. The reason there's additional cost on top of the $150+ I'd already payed FedEx for shipping was that the parcel was valued at over $1000 AUD, so Australian Customs is putting their hand out too.
The linked website (based in Hong Kong) looking very suspect didn't help either.

Its Fedex customs clearance, I was very suspicious at first as this number is not officially listed on their website and the link was to pay the customs clearance fee via paydollar.com.
I called the number and got them to confirm a some of details that only Fedex would know, turns out its legit. The tracking details changed from 'On hold awaiting clearance' to 'Released for delivery' not long after I paid the clearance fee.
The item was delivered the next day.

TLDR - its a bit odd but its legit Fedex.

They email you or SMS you and give you the link for making the payment for the GST.
It is a genuine payment request from Fedex.

It's a scam. We don't even use Fedex at work. The tracking number they emailed me does not exist.
