Here is some of the information from the Fedex anti-fraud websites. It clearly exposes the scammers. Half the people posting here that this is legit are scammers, the other half have unfortunately been thoroughly scammed.
My own experience was to ignore them and my package arrived on time and earlier than the emails suggested, without any other cost.
These people are getting shipping info straight from the packages Shipping Label it gives them your name, address, phone number, email and senders details as well, including order number and tracking number. They also seem to be using portable scanners or something to scan the Shipping Label, so that they can send you an attachment of the label, to make it look more legit.
Now here is the Fedex stuff.
How to Recognize Fraud: FedEx does not request, via unsolicited call, mail, text or email, payment or personal information in return for goods in transit or in FedEx custody. If you receive any of these or similar communications, do not reply or cooperate with the sender. FedEx is not associated, affiliated with or authorized to act on behalf of any national/local law enforcement authorities. (In other words Fedex do not collect payments on behalf of any government). If any individual, on the pretext of being a FedEx customer care team member is directing/ connecting you with any of national/local law enforcement authorities in respect of any shipment containing illegal items in your name, do not share any personal information. If your interaction with such requests resulted in financial loss, you should contact your bank immediately. Consider contacting the local law enforcement authorities within the vicinity. Be prepared and proactive with our online security and safety tips.
We’re serious about your privacy and security. But today’s cyber criminals can be convincing. Here are two important things to remember: We never request payment or personal information in exchange for releasing a package. If you get a suspicious email, do not reply or cooperate with the sender.
Please forward your phishing e-mails to abuse @ fedex.com If you feel you have been a victim of one of these other scams.

Caller: Text Message Scam: Once your real FedEX parcel passes through some ports/airports, they take the tracking number and SMS you to scam you out of anything they can get their hands on. I have never been scammed by this behaviour, but it's very acceptable in countries like Lantau Island, Hong Kong.

Not sure why there's so many scam posts, it's legitimate. Number is listed on fedex's website also.
Customs/Duties for goods over $1K AUD.

It is a scam - FedEx is 132610 but their number is very hard to find on their site. If in doubt ring your supplier. They even had my tracking number etc. But ring your supplier before paying anything as import tax is on the sender not the buyer.

Caller: Fed Ex Came here last week trying to get an answer about whether calls from this number were legit or not - after seeing so many conflicting answers I thought I’d come back with my own experience.
I ended up contacting FedEx through their official website and they came back to me next day yes they could see that their customs clearance team had tried calling me. And all they wanted was my full name, no money. So as far as I’m concerned the number is legit

Caller: Scammers This is 100% a scam! They are somehow getting FedEx user data and using it to seem legit. But as said, it is 100% not legit.
I ignored the calls and text messages, the same ones everyone else here received, and yet my package did arrived from China as originally scheduled from the REAL FedEx.

Caller: "Fedex-Exp" Sophisticated scam. Bought online from Australian website, low value item, $70. Item dispatched via Fedex from Hong Kong. Next day all of a sudden started receiving missed phonecalls. Rung very briefly. Then text from "Fedex-Exp". Delivery fee/Importation fee scam.

If you paid, then your parcel arrived, was there paperwork for the extra you paid or did it arrive anyway (because it was always going to arrive) and that extra is now in a scammer's pocket?

Caller: 1800 111 112 For me it was legit. It seemed like a scam. But it did have my tracking number correct. It asked me to email sydrod @ fedex.com. Instead I called Fedex direct ( not the number on sms) and Fedex confirmed I need to pay duties via Bpoint.
I can confirm fedex use this strange method to request payment of customs duties.
But do not trust me. Ring Fedex directly to confirm your own sms

Caller: fedex In my experience this is NOT a scam. I received the SMS: Fedex express shipment requires payment and duties of $... payment by Bpoint tel 1800 111 112 or contact sydrod @ fedex.com
I thought it was a scam but I was expecting a package and the sms did have the correct tracking number. I was still unsure so waited until the next business day to contact Fedex directly. I did not call fedex from the number provided in SMS rather I looked up their website directly. They confirmed that the request was legit. Don't take my word for it. Contact FedEx independently to confirm any request like this.
A very strange system to request payment. Very suspicious in this day and age, yet in my case it was legit.

Caller: FEDDEX Its legitimate, to be safe please call the FEDEX Australian number and confirm over the phone the details etc.
Or send an email to sydrod @ fedex.com requesting an invoice for the duty/tax required for more clarification.
Everyone saying its a scam are trolling or just straight idiots, just use your brain.
If you're expecting anything over 1K and your supplier didnt specify DDP then pay it, if not then ignore the text or contact customer support through your own research.
If you're still sceptical just google FEDEX Australia phone number and call them, they will say the same.. Or just wait for your package to get sent back and cry about it

Caller: Fedex Legitimate message from FedEx-Exp. Bought something from overseas where the vendor’s website made it clear import duties and GST would be payable to FedEx by the buyer, so was expecting some form of contact. Got the text message shortly after the tracking page registered the parcel arriving in Australia.
The SMS looks really scammy so I confirmed by calling the main Fedex number (132 610) who also emailed me a breakdown of the import taxes which matched the amount in the text, and confirmed they use BPOINT as their payment system.
I have no idea why they don’t have a less scammy-looking method of requesting legitimate fees. Do your own confirmation checks!

Caller: FedEx This one is legitimately Fedex, sadly. When you import something to Australia over the value of $1000, you need to pay duty and GST and Fedex will collect it. Even the $93 processing fee was an Australia government charge.
To confirm, I 1. Rang the publicly available Fedex number. 2. Independently calculated the amount of Duty / GST due on my incoming goods.
