Caller: 1800 076 072 Definitely Centrelink. Go onto their website and check the number or call any of their other numbers and see if they're trying to reach you.... because they are.

This is definitely a sophisticated scam. I first received a text saying not to reply just to answer the next call as its from centrelink. I answered and a guy asked me to verify my details. I told him I'll have to call centreline myself as he wouldn't tell me why they called. He was very persuading and even gave me this number to call back to verify. I said thanks and hung up. I didn't call the 1800 number I called the 132850 and they confirmed with me that this is indeed a scam call. Be aware as they knew my name and wanted the rest of my details.

I know that there is a lot of scam going on. BUT 1800 076 072 is 100% debt recovery within Centrelink. How do I know? Because I work for Centrelink.
When a staff member from Debt Recovery want to speak with you regarding a debt or over recovered debt, they send you a text message first (if you are subscribed) and the text is informing you that a service officer will call you from a private number.
They cannot tell you anything about the your Centrelink record if they cannot verify you. You HAVE to give them your full name, date of birth and address.

PEOPLE THIS IS NOT A SCAM!!! Centrelink calls you from a Private number always. The number is legit go onto the Services Australia website, go to contact us and you can go through the Centrelink numbers and check it under debt recovery. I work for Centrelink in the debt team and i make these outbound calls. I understand everyone being suspicious though due to the amount of scams going around. We are calling you yes, but we still have to confirm we have the right person on the phone before we can proceed due to the Privacy laws. Even when you google this number the first option that comes up is the Services Australia website.

Why would they be calling if you currently don't have a debt, this is where I don't trust it and won't answer. There is no debt, all debts are paid and have been so for a long time. So why would they call if it's legitimate?

Caller: Centrelink There may be a scam associated with this number, but in my case it was legitimately centrelink. I received a text from centrelink stating I owed a debt and would receive a call, or to call this number. I received a call from a private number shortly after.
If you are concerned about a potential scam but want safetly check if this is legitimate: log into your mygov, go to centrelink and on the home page under 'favourite services' click 'money you owe' to see if there is a debt there.

Caller: Person claiming to be from Services Australia My mobile rang from "No Caller ID". Answered it, shouldn't have - it beeped off the instant I said "Hello". It was clearly a robot checking my number was a current Aust. mobile. Rang again shortly after. I rejected the call. A well-spoken man's voice left a voicemail message saying "Please call Services Australia on 1800 076 072". This was 7:30pm - you won't get through to Services Aust. at this hour, of course. Then my landline rang from "Private Name - Private Number". It rang off but no message was left. They will pester me again... It's certainly a scam. Don't believe some of the badly written comments above that claim to be from Centrelink operators. My caller didn't know my name. And Centrelink always contact me directly using MyGov or email. The penalties for phone scamming should be really severe and SIM calls to mobiles are way too cheap now. Many people would be taken in by these clever scumbags. Do NOT engage with these crims!

1800 076 072 is the phone number for Centrelink Debt Recovery. however when Centrelink make outbound call to you, it shows up as a private phone number on your phone.
If you receive a call and the phone number 1800 076 072 shows on your phone, then it's a scam (The scammers use a system to make this number appear to seem legit).
But if you call that number, then you will be calling through to Centrelink.

Thank you very much for the information above. I received a call and he asked me my address and DOB. I was wary to give it out on the phone and asked if I could call him back. I googled the number he gave me and found this page. I was not aware of this scam before. So thanks a million!

You DON'T HAVE to give them your details because you don't know who is on the other line. Tell them you will ring Services Australia yourself then hang up.
