Now this may or may not be the ATO, But I am a pensioner and have not had to lodge a return for over two decades.

Caller: ATO left detailed message.

Was initially concerned it was a scam, however good idea to get your tax agent to deal with it. Mine went into my tax account and verified what they wanted from me was in fact legit and he sorted it for me.

They do call from private a number.
If you have any outstanding lodgements or debt, they will call you and let you know. Ask for a reference number if you don't want to take the call and call back.

I called to ATO and they said it's not their number.

The ATO always asks for an account identifier, preferably a TFN (refer https://www.ato.gov.au/About-ATO/About-us/Contact-us/Phone-us/Individuals-enquiries/), the ATO needs to ensure you are who you say you are. You wouldn't expect to call any other government department or your financial institution or even your energy supplier without providing an account identifier and establishing proof of your identity, why would the ATO be any different?

Dont be fooled by this phone call and all the technical mumbo jumbo they throw at you along with the "legit" text message that comes afterwards. after following all the prompts and speaking to some random indian lady my entire retirement fund was stolen, all my cards and accounts were frozen and now i am homeless. Immediatly BLOCK this number as soon as it shows up! I am posting this from a mobile phone that i borrowed from a homeless lady that also fell victim to this scam! NOW WE SLEEP UNDER THE SAME TREE!

So many FAKE comments on here, the lying scumbags are obviously commenting on their own filthy scam number. None of it is true - THEY ARE SCAMMERS.

Absolute bucket of scumbags, the lowest of the low - they left a message on my phone. I would love to rip their dirty thieving heads off. Please Australia, block these type of dirty rotten scumbag thieves - they are NOT invited into our homes, and are highly offensive.

Careful, these days scammers can imitate genuine phone numbers (fake links etc. etc). If you have a MyGov account check in to see if the Tax Office has been genuinely trying to contact you.

Anyone who gets a call from this number should never give out any personal info over the phone. Make an appt and go in personally to resolve. Call ato main number and ask them.
My accountant does my tax and she said scam as ato emails them directly of any issues. Protect your information people

there are a lot of scam reviews for this number, but that is because scammers are spoofing the number (for those who aren't technology savvy, they can change their caller ID to any other number)...
if anyone calls you claiming to be any government department, get a reference number, and go to that website and call them back via that number, DO NOT call any number they give you, the only information you should take from them is a reference number, DO NOT give them ANY information until you can verify that it is the actual department.

I got an Indian lady too also wanted my bank details, when I said why "you haven't even identified yourself yet, let alone told me what this even in regards to. She said "its for your ABN records, I said I don't have an ABN I never have. Then she said " oh ok well I should be able to get around that, then the phone went quiet for so long. It was not like talking to the ATO at all. Wierd experience. I hung up

November 2022. I just rang they use the ATO voice print to confirm my identity so they asked for no personal information and they knew all of my tax history it was just a direct number that they don’t give out and I skip the queue as they had given me a reference number

They call you with a private number, and you should call back manually, as with any callers from banks, gov offices, etc.
if you see a number it could be fake?

I had a call at 6pm from an Indian gentleman on this number claiming to be the ATO. He refused to give me a name until I gave him a tax file number, which I did not. I asked who the call was in relation to, and he said he did not know who he was calling. If this is the ATO, then its a sad state of affairs that they are not prepared to ask for me by name. And I also logged on to the ATO and have nothing outstanding. Very odd.

Dodgy scam!
