This is a SCAM !!! Automated message from ATO (who never do such things) threatening me with arrest (over tax ?!?!?!) which is their usual method to panic you into a payment. Ignore such calls !!!

I've had many calls/messages on answering machine about tax avoidance/evasion usually by Indian scammers- this was first that was computer generated. Gutter trash who prey on people

I had a call this morning... As soon as I saw United States I thought... I'd love to find out where they are and send someone from the Feds over to have a chat... I'm sure they're on to them already... Probably from Africa as renowned for doing this.

Same deal as Dave, phishing message to get you to call back and make payments to a thief. How come these scammers are allowed to use a 1300 number for fraud? Surely there are laws to prevent this?

Yes, got one today. Definite scam. They don't use your name, they threaten you with warrant for arrest, they don't give you the standard call back number (ATO number in this case), no reference number, nothing. If you were fool enough to make the call they would no doubt ask you for your tax file number.... SCAM.

Yes a scam just a recorded message accusing me of tax evasion and to ring the number... do not ring... just hang up and report on and tell others so they do not get caught out. Thanks to those people above who posted comments to confirm what I thought.

Got an automated message from a private number claiming to be the "ATO" - at the end says something like "we wish you good luck" and asks you to ring this number 1300 596 391). Just for fun I tried ringing back, but it just kept ringing. If they're going to try to scam people, surely they ought to answer?

The ATO will never:
threaten you with immediate arrest ask you to pay money to receive a refund or payment from us ask you to pay a debt via iTunes vouchers, or pre-paid credit card or store gift cards ask you to provide personal information, such as your tax file number (TFN) or credit card number, via email or SMS ask you to pay money into a personal bank account direct you to download files from the internet, or open attachments in unsolicited emails.

They told me I am wanted for tax evasion. I called them back twice. They keep hanging up on me when I ask questions they can't answer. Like, what's my middle name.
