Claimed to call "on behalf of the ATO" and provided a reference number. Asked me to call 1300 559 148

Caller: Scammer pretending to be from the ATO

Called at just after 8am with a number (03) 5610 6283) showing it originated in Poowong, Victoria which is a small Victorian dairy town of about 170 people. I didn’t answer it as I know that ATO does not call from numbers that are displayed and the ATO has been all over the media saying this due to all the ATO scams going on. Also the ATO does not have an office in Poowong more does any other government organisation. The message left said to call the 1300 number and quote a reference number; which I won’t be doing.

Tax scammer. If in doubt call the ATO directly or speak to your accountant. Never return calls to this number. Never deal with 'entities' claiming to represent the ATO rather than the ATO directly itself.

I just got this call and it said they were from AGO looking for this guy and gave me a reference number.
