My story goes like this, a company i purchased goods with (using paypal) took over a month to process the payment (i assumed it was done then) at the time the payment tried to be processed I did not have the funds to cover it, as a result it put my paypal account in negative and i score a hefty declined bank charge from my bank). Paypal sent an email stating they will try again, which they did and all is good with my paypal balance, 2 weeks later I get a text from ARL telling me to contact them .. first i contacted paypal to confirm all was good, and that they saw nothing to suggest they transaction was forwarded to ARL (although confirmed that is who they use) .. I then contacted ARL and they told me it was on behalf of paypal. I confirmed my name and told them that i contacted paypal and have no outstanding debt, they asked me for my address, dob and email.. i told them I can give them my email but do not like giving further details over phone.. they said that to stop further calls or collections from them that I would need to provide these details for their assistance to happen .. (sorry forgot to add, that at the start they said it was a courtesy call) So from this I believe that it is a legit company however, am unsure how they got hold of this overdrawn amount (as paypal did not forward it to them, and it was around $50) and i believe paypal would not send it to them prior to trying the transaction again in 5 days (as per email), and also would have assumed that if they had done that, that they would have corrected it after the payment was successful. My assumption is that ARL have access to the paypal database and see when transactions do not go through and just take it upon themselves to chase them up... this lady could not/would not confirm if they could see all was well, but insisted i give her my dob and address to that she can confirm it is the right person so as to correct the record her end .. i told her to contact paypal herself to confirm I am not in arrears and correct it, again she stated she would need me to verify my information .. i do not know what to take from the call and her suggestions that without verification and her assistance that future dealings will occur, but am just going to ignore it.

I got the following SMS:
Please contact ARL Collect Pty Ltd regarding an urgent business matter on 1300 303 849 or reply CALLME. Quote Ref DN105912422.

It's legit, but the SMS above looks like a scam. I called PayPal direct and was forwarded to them

Received a text message saying I needed to call 1300 303 849 quoting a reference#
After reading the comments here I decided to call as I do have a pending payment on Paypal as a result of changing bank accounts. A recorded message states it is Paypal and to either press 1 to make a payment or 2 to speak to my case manager, I chose 2..
A very lovely lady answered and asked for my reference# then asked for my name, I told her I wasn’t sure if it was a scam so I wasn’t going to give her my personal details, she accepted this assuring me it wasn’t a scam and asked for my number the message was sent to. I gave her my mobile number and she told me my name which confirmed for me it was legit.
Not a scam, it was about my negative balance and just had to explain it has been paid but still pending on my Paypal account

I get this message every week! "Hello, We have a very important message for you regarding your pay pal account. Please call Australian Receivables Ltd on 1300 303 849 or reply quoting Reference number bla bla bla" At least every week! I don't have any debt on my Pay Pal account, in fact I hardly uses it all. This mob may be a registered business but they are obviously shady as heck and I will be damned if I will call them back. If they are certain my pay pal has an issue then send it to me in writing, else F off!

Got a text message stating last chance to stop escalation of personal business matter - so called the number as this was first message ever received, they asked me to confirm personal details, when I asked what it was regarding they said either confirm personal information or they will take me to court - seriously, take me to court, I don't have any clear what this is about.

Received this text today:

“Please contact ARL on 1300 303 849 OR reply CALLME. We are now offering a reduced balance offer on Ref DN102853405. This offer is valid for the next 48hours.”

Called the number and spoke to a guy who asked me what my full name was, residential address and email. I gave him the details but he had a different address and email on file. He asked if I had lived anywhere else and if I had another email, I answered no to both. He asked if I was ‘sure’, to which I said yes.
He told me to contact PayPal to discuss further but I told him I don’t have a PayPal account.
Ended the call.

I get texts every few days and calls from a private number. I yelled at one of them as I'm sick and tired of their
bull£$it crap. I don't even have a PayPal account. I hope some poor naive person doesn't not get scammed from these a-holes. Texts look ok real but for goodness sakes if it was urgent a proper call would be put out. Makes you question every call/text you get these days

Two text messages, the first requesting I call them, the second 'warning' me I had to pay to stop matter escalating. Now, a letter requesting payment of $593.10. I did become overdrawn on my PayPal account, but this was rectified many weeks ago. I was contacted yesterday by My heritage...who I paid using PayPal for a DNA test last year. My heritage informed me that hackers had stolen the PayPal details of a very large number of clients, including mine, and this is obviously where this scam comes from, as I owe PayPal nothing. Beware!

Received a very legitimate looking text message that read "Please contact Australian Receivables Ltd regarding an urgent business matter on 1300 303 849 or reply CALLME. Quote Ref DN105414357". Lucky I googled this before I replied.
Definately beware of these people!

This company is a subcontractor for PayPal. I didn’t realise my account was in the negative. It had bee for about 2 months. Then I got quite a few SMS from ARL saying we tried to call you and call us back. However, because I never had any missed calls I thought this was a hoax and never called them. Then I received a litter in the mail from ARL saying they a debt collectors for PayPal. I still didn’t reply to them because I have since rectified the negative balance with PayPal.

I received a call from a private number, and when I asked who ARL is, was told they're acting on PayPal's behalf. To identify me, the caller asked for my login email which I didn't give her, explaining that I do not provide personal details to callers from unlisted numbers, and requested a reference number and their phone number - this one. When I called, I was transferred three times with a message that each voice mailbox is full, or that the extension doesn't use the service(?) I checked my Paypal account, and it's in the positive, although, about a week ago it was in the minus $49.00. I checked the company details at ASIC (they have been registered since 2003), and I checked their website at WhoIs - definitely a legitimate company, however, with highly questionable operating procedures. Two Victorian women took legal action against them in 2012 for harassment.
