Complete scam, the posters here saying it is real are either being scammed or part of the scam sadly. I spoke to PayPal and they said it's running rampant at the moment. Never contact the company, always call PayPal first.

States some reference number and when I check ARL website it is NOT their number so it’s a scam, heck I even did a text chat on the actual ARL website and they didn’t want to know about the scam so just ignore it everyone save yourselves the hassle. The actual number for ARL is 1300 665 274

I checked both my PayPal accounts and of course the balances are fine and there are no notifications from PayPal in my Message Centre. Surely I would hear from them first about a ‘supposed issue’ rather than engage ARL?

SMS from 0407 254 327 which says "Please contact ARL on 1300 303 849 or reply CALLME (quote ref #) concerning a matter received from PauPal Australia Pty Ltd"
I tried calling the 1300 number but got nothing but an engaged signal. Am I assuming this is a scam?

Got same message as everyone else, saying I have paypal debt. I don't have a PAYPAL account. Definite SCAM. They're phishing for personal details.

So I just got a text message from "ARL" telling me the following:

Your Paypal account has been referred to ARL for further action and requires attention. To pay now, please go to https://arlcollect.com.au/customers#login alternatively, call us to discuss on 1300 303 849, and quote ref [number] Thank you. I just got off the phone with PayPal and they cant find any debt in my name, all my accounts are good, yet the number on the text is legit. The text message with a link to the website is considered phishing as they don't have all of my information. Paypal have requested a screenshot of the message and have requested I ignore and block the number.

Scam message. Do not respond or pick up calls from this number. I have checked with ACC. SCAM. Always check your PayPal account first, if no issues disregard scam text messages.

This might help, I also received a letter in the mail (note my PayPal is still currently my previous address, not my current) saying I owed a total of $3,685.65. It looks like a real bill, however my account on Paypal says balance is 0. Another thing, they have my full legal name, online I have used my business name for years for all online business transactions, so if there was a real debt it's within the business itself. I believe they got my information from professional profiles that were public like seek, LinkedIn etc. PayPal rep said they couldn't give me information on the fake account with my name to it and it will be investigated, reported to the police and everyone else should too. A company claiming you have a debt without proving it and demanding payments "or else" is extortion. You have a right to know exactly what the debt is for, if it is for a purchase you have the right to know where the purchase was delivered. They are vermin, answer the calls and entertain them, don't provide any personal information-not even your name. Keep safe.

Not a call, but I received a letter from ARL with this number to call if I had questions. The letter claimed I had an outstanding amount owed to Paypal, and Paypal had tried contacting me multiple times before referring the debt to ARL for collection. It felt suspicious to me, but too many things checked out for me to be sure it was a scam. So I called Paypal directly and it turns out someone had opened a Paypal account in my name and did have an outstanding balance. Paypal has restricted that account and are investigating.

TLDR: Letter might not be fake. Call Paypal to check, someone might have stolen your identity.

Actually I called them after receiving a letter from ARL stating that my PayPal account is overdrawn. On closer investigation, the account, although in my name is not my account. Someone has set up an account with my details and run it into debit, so of course they come to me. Not resolved yet, but at least I can see what's going on. The fact that the number of the letter is not the main company number is not an issue as that is the number for the Department dealing with PayPal. Don't just ignore these things as they don't resolve themselves and could affect your credit rating without you knowing.

Received a letter in mail from ARL saying 'Paypal had made a number of attempts to contact me" and now debt of $1699.49 had been transferred to ARL - no as above . Trouble is I don't have and have never had a PayPal account (for this very reason) Will ring PayPal and possibly ARL via the website no (thanks above commenter) and give both a bolocking.....................

Not a call, and not me, my husband. He got a legit looking email porportedly from arl debt collection, in connection with Ergon, and though we did deal with them, it's been three years, and we are no longer customers. How did they get his details to make up a bogus debt that we do not have? Hack the account of Ergon? Well, hubby called them, would not give an address, and they say they cannot proceed without it. Well, piss off you stupid people, and go scam someone else. Leave us alone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been receiving letters demanding money for PAYPAL no idea what its about thinking of ringing the ombudsman something should be done about these parasites

I don’t have PayPal..basically I don’t have any accounts so explain that..but why didn’t they leave a message knowing this day and age of scam callers…that they would or could explain why I have a important business matter..after all it is my private number..
