My theory on how this scam works. Sounds similar to the "missed number" scam. They dial you, it rings once maybe twice and you get the "missed call" message. You ring the "local or what looks like an AUS number back. The number gets diverted to an international overseas number. You are now being charged an international TIMED call. On this scam once connected to the international number you get diverted to an answering machine. If you take the time to leave a message and it takes even 30 seconds you are being charged $$ for every second. If the scammers send this to 100 people they will pickup $5? per person (That's AU $ !!). Who checks their bill and would notice a $5 charge? Chances are 95 people will not check and of the 5 people that do check only one person may call the service provider to complain. And just like the missed number scam there will be nothing the service provider can do but give you your money back.
In the "missed number" scam when you called the number the person that did answer will say, "I'll transfer you" they transfer you to a number that is charging YOU for what turns out to be a very expensive 30 seconds, while the person fumbles around stalling for a long as they can. The longer you vent your frustration at the delay, the longer the call and the more money they get.
If you think this might have happened check your bill and report it to your service provider. In a way the "Sherwin Lodge" is an automated version of the Missed Number scam, you don't even get to talk to the scammers, just their answering machine.
