I have an answering machine; if you are genuine and leave a message I will call back (depending on who it is). Scammers don't leave messages.

Caller: Edith Cowan University They identified themselves straight away, doing health survey, called in the middle of Sunday lunch, not appropriate really as Sundays usually family time. l replied would not participate at this time, they understood and were polite.

I have call prefference set, so cold calling is supposed to be banned. It's bad enough that the charities are allowed to ignore that preference but some university calling from the otherside of the country is beyond the pale.
I'll send them a penalty claim and see how that goes.

Caller: Someone was talking and ended call at about 3 seconds I called back and it is Edith Cowan University. I asked myself the question.... is someone getting funding to call random numbers to get a statistical outcome without completing the task properly.

Had a call from this number on Friday August 3rd. Was a 'live' person instead of the usual 'robodiallers' because she left a message on the answering machine as we were out at the time. Wanted to do a health survey. Said she would try again later. Quite a surprise as we have the Telstra Call Guardian phone where anyone not on the phone's contact list has to announce themselves then press the # key before the call will connect. The 'robodiallers' hang up because they can't press # and most 'real' unknown people normally hang up because they know we won't take the call anyway unless it is someone we know that we don't have on the phone's contact list.
Deleted the message and put the number on the blocked list. The same number tried to call again today (Sunday 5th August) at about 3:45pm. Didn't even get as far as the answering machine this time because I've blocked the number. I know some people might say "why don't you just do the survey(s)"? Well, my answer to that is - I pay for the use of my phone and it is for my personal use and convenience. It is not for unknown people to keep calling trying to scam me/sell me something/get me to vote for them/ do a survey, etc.
There should be no exemptions to the Do Not Call Register. Full Stop. But, the great thing about the Call Guardian is that I can block every single call not on the phone's contact list (they don't even get the option to say their name and press #) if I want to take it that far. I don't really want to do that at the moment because I might miss an important call from someone not on the phone's contact list.

Probably Edith Cowen University calling. Caller, if them, did not leave message at all. A word of advice to honest callers:- Leave a message on the answering machine thoroughly Identifying your self and what you would like to have done. You might then get a reply! You can thank the obscene amount of scam calls a person gets for reducing call receivers to this tactic. In short, think like a professional, act like a professional and above all, BE a professional.
