I got a call today. The first question asked was "we need to verify your identity, can I have your birth date and home address", my response was HELL NO. I have been the victim of identity fraud with my mail stolen and thousands of dollars of bills that are not mine are now with the police." NO WAY I was going to give my birthdate in addition to all else stolen from my mailbox. But no, this guy won't give me any details of WHY he is calling me, just asked for verification of my birth-date before proceeding. WHO DOES THAT?! Why would I give that info to someone I don't know and trust? Is like handing over your passport to a random stranger. If CMA is legitimate they need to change their approach or at least tell you what they are calling about and identify themselves from the outset. I am very upset and have contacted my bank to change all my details AGAIN.

To the guy who wrote, "There is nothing nasty...". It's obvious that you are an Indian, and probably working for them - your spelling is terrible and you miss out lots of english words..and you claim the Indian accent is similar to the Australian accent....Are you hearing impaired?. Do you work for them?....In India?

There is nothing nasty as these comments says. Charter mercantile is a debt collection agency. They are working for american express & optus communications. The reason they are calling is simple - to get in connection with those people who owes money to them and stays out of contact for long time.
They can't give out these details directly because that would be a breach of their privacy policies.
Now telling about the accent , they got an off shore office in India and it would be Indians who makes the calls. Definitely their accent is little different from oz accent.
But after all their is a reputed company following all the rules and regulations put forward by Australian Federal government and AICC(Australian Competition and Consumer Committee), they got an office in Queensland and even if you are giving out any information it will be secured and won't be used for any other purpose.
All the above details are true to the best of my knowledge and from my personal experience.

Well Michelle, all I can suggest is that if you had been a faithfull wife as taught by the Prophet, he wouldn't have left you, and do you really think that when/if/maybe/whatever he pays Amex, they are going to give you your money? No, you are an unsecured creditor so too bad, if he ever applies at my sawmill I'll give him a job and won't tell you where he is.

I have also been contacted from the (07) 3620 7577 number with requests for information based on a 'personal matter'. Persistent to a point where my husband now answers the phone. If this about debt collection it wasn't mentioned and as neither my husband or I have debts I'd be very skeptical of any claims that this is what the call is about.

These guys are only chasing what is rightfully owed to the vendor that is using them to recoup losses from either unpaid credit cards (in my ex's case around $60K) or unpaid mobile phone bills etc. If you were rightfully owed money wouldn't you do all you could legally to recoup your loss - of course you would - that is all AMEX and Optus and whoever else uses them is doing.

I have also been contacted by these scammers today. They are now using (07) 3620 7518 and 0421 144 246. I do not have AMEX or optus. so their story is bogus. Shame on you losers that commit this crime. You will rot in hell. Get yourself a real job that will make you family proud of you.

Funny how people are so happy to take money or not pay their bills, but then get insulted/upset when the person wants their money back. Time to grow up kids
