Caller: Purportedly Eagers Nissan I received an email with this phone number in it, purporting to be from EAGERS NISSAN, BREAKFAST CREEK RD, NEWSTEAD who I'd dealt with a decade ago. My personal details in the email were accordingly outdated, and those details were formatted very amateurishly, padded out with visible escape characters, making me suspicious of a poorly programmed mail merge. Incongruously the tone of the email was warning me I'd better contact them to book my overdue service or I'd lose my "complimentary" roadside assistance as if that was still an applicable thing. Rather than use this phone number I called the company from its 1300 549 363 still in my contact list: short story long they said they'd check their mailing list but then added only as an afterthought immediately before hanging up that it probably didn't come from them because they were hacked a couple months ago. Wait, what. If this is indeed the scenario, THANK YOU FOR INFORMING YOUR COMPROMISED CUSTOMERS. I'll do a little more due diligence to determine it wasn't just a service admin being a numpty with an old data set before deciding whether this is referable to the service provider & the Federal Police, or just to Eagers HO and ..who.. the ACCC? for not informing me of their breach.
