Thermite

Got a robocall from a scammer saying someone had used my visa card to purchase $900 in bitcoin. The usual press 1 to stop it and 2 to allow it.
I pressed 1 and the scambaiting games began.

They explained that someone had used my visa card to buy the bitcoin.
They asked me to confirm my identity and bank details, balance etc.
I gave them completely fake details for both (I have a cheat sheet set up for this).

To know what computer I used they asked for the key to the right of the left option key.
They expected Windows or Mac.
I deliberately confused them and screwed up their plan by saying that there was a red and white checkered ball and that my computer was an Amiga X5000 (running OS 4.1).
They asked what browser I used and I said Timberwolf (Amiga version of Firefox).
If they do actually check on this computer they will find it is real and is currently on sale from amigaone.com.

They generally then direct you to download a Remote desktop client like Ultraviewer, Anydesk or Teamviewer so that they can then hack your computer and get your bank access and other personal details. However, Since I told them I was using an Amiga that there was no Amiga version of Ultraviewer that I could use. This would also be the same for the other Remote access software they try to get you to download.

I have been through this before with these scammers and knew their next step.

The scammers then said (what they usually say) that had tied to take out $9000 from my account and that they wanted my help to set a trap for them.
They wanted me to take out $9000 from my account in cash to trick the hackers into thinking that their attempts have worked.

In reality the scammer then tries to get you to transfer the money to them, by buying Steam/Apple cards and telling them the numbers on the cards or by a money transfer service like western union.

The scammers will even try to make you not trust staff at the bank who are trying to protect you. They will say that the hackers are in the bank and will be the ones who ask you why you are taking the money out and try to warn you that it could be scammers tricking you to take it out (so you should make up a story and not tell the truth (that someone on the phone told you to do it).

So, no matter what excuse they give, no matter what they say to do do not believer the scammers. If you trust them and do as they say your money and personal info will be lost.

I managed to keep them on for about 30 minutes asking questions and keeping them occupied trying to come up with even half believable answers before they finally got the sh!ts with me and hung up.

Now that you know their tactics you can scambait them as well.

Scam. For whatever it's worth, this is an invalid number in the Qld dial plan.

A robot type voice just called, I asked where he was calling from. He said after a pause, Clover. I asked if that was Clover Pty Ltd. Another extended pause and I repeated the question. After a wait he said "yes". I asked these questions as the Do Not Call Register can take complaints if people don't answer such questions. I then said what is your address. Silence. I asked 3 times and he hung up. Sounded like an Asian voice but it was robot-like so I think it was manipulated. I am now going to report to Do Not Call Register.

This number called then immediately connected to another scam phone. Possibly piggybacked off the fraud number

Said they were NBN, I could hear another person talking in the background. I asked them questions (like "if you're from NBN, why can I hear your colleagues?") until they hung up.

Exactly as per first sentence of report by Thermite on Jan 18th 2024. I couldn't be bothered playing games with these moronic thieves. Just block the number.

Caller: probably a scammer. I use a phone ID device on my landline

Get back at scammers. Purchase a telephone number ID device, most good stares sell them.
Then, you too can see who ( and remember they disguise their real number with fake ID in their computer software) be very careful.
As X-Files Fox Mulder says, Trust No One.
