This is a fraud number aiming to steal your personal identification in order to gain access to your paypal account, a process known as "Smishing" when done via SMS.

Paypal will NEVER contact you on any number aside from the ones listed on their official site ( https://www.paypal.com/au/ )

Those numbers are;
1800 073 263 (toll free)
(02) 8223 9500

Anyone claiming otherwise is not affiliated in any manner with PayPal, Inc.

For more information about what you can do to protect yourself from future SMS 'Smishing', please visit the Australian consumer information website at; https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0350-text-message-spam

I just tried to register on this site and registration is closed. I really am not happy about being anonymous as it sounds like I won't be standing by this, which isn't true. Everyone on here who said this number is a scam - you all freaked me out for NO good reason. I contacted PayPal and they confirmed they use this number - this is their email to me:
You have received an SMS to add our phone number 0458 729 725 since you recently confirmed your mobile number. I assure you that it is PayPal's number and it is being used for automated SMS notification only, not for calls. This is why you were unable to call the said number.

Should you have further inquiries, do not hesitate to email us or you may also call directly at (02) 8223 9500/1-800-073-263, 06:00-22:00 Monday through Friday AEST/AEDT and 08:00-19:00 Saturday and Sunday AEST/AEDT.

Thank you for using PayPal.

Sincerely,
Arvie

It's PayPal. Those getting unsolicited texts: someone is mistyping their phone number and typing yours instead. Like getting a wrong number call. Don't stress.

1st Message: PayPal: Your confirmation code is: 597729. Your code expires in 5 minutes. Please don't reply.
2nd Message: PayPal Fraud Alert: Are you trying to pay $264.95 AUD? If yes, reply 1. If no, reply 2. Msg & Data rates apply.

Messages over a month apart so when I saw the second message in the history it looked legitimate.

Rang Paypal and they confirmed no messages had been sent.

Appears to be a scam

So, since 2017 this phone number has been scamming Aussies but nobody has done a thing about it. Yet, if you protest against the CHO directives, thousands of police will descend upon you on bus, on tank, with pepper spray and automatic weapons firing projectiles.

Just made an ebay purchase and received this message:
"[PayPal] Did ou pay $1235 AUD to Bing Lee Electronics Pty Limited on 30 November? Reply 1 if yes or 2 if No. [Reply Needed]"
The details were almost correct but very concerning they know these details.

Caller: Not a call. A text confirmation due to change in my mobile number

Not a scam. I contacted Pay Pal by phone and email. This number is used to text confirmation codes only. It is NOT used to call as a phone number.

Caller: EBAY!

Received a txt which included details of a refund ebay had messed up completely (x3) and including trying to do a reversal on an item I have not even received yet. They owe me money (account in credit and now the payment system has changed) and it eventually came as a reversal of another completely wrong transaction. ONLY PAYPAL AND EBAY had the details. The txt message came as a NUMBER instead of just PAYPAL. But inside the txt it said PayPal then the details. But I AM NOT SET UP TO RECEIVE ANY, I repeat NOT ANY sms from PayPal as notification. Ergo whoever did this, had access to EBAY information and PRESUMED (wrongly) that I got SMS notifications from PayPal. They couldnt legally send that from EBAY because I am also NOT sent up to get SMS from ebay. So has anyone else got these PAYPAL texts after an EBAY transaction? And do you know they are separate companies now? This has been reported to PAYPAL in case its an individual working for EBAY trying to cover up their own stuff ups and keep their job. The same individual who in ebay chat, tried to get my paypal login details using an old trick which is say the WRONG one and wait for you to correct it. DO NOT FALL FOR IT.

DO NOT reply or respond to this number! It is NOT paypal! If you try it you get a message THIS MOBILE NUMBER IS SWITCHED OFF OR NOT IN A MOBILE SERVICE AREA. That is a message for a personal mobile phone. NOT a company!

Report it to PayPal and do NOT listen to posts here that say its legit. Scammers have access to this board too.

Found a post from a Moderator at PayPal's Community - seems that it is a bith of both "legitimate and fraudulent". Read below - but in short, don't click on any links that it sends and if you are ever in doubt, check your PayPal account via a fresh browser.

"Hi everyone,

I wanted to pop into this thread because there's been a lot of different information over the past few years. Our knowledge has been updated and clarification is needed.

PayPal uses a couple of different short SMS numbers for communication. However, as any number can be spoofed, it would be wise not to rely on the appearance of a specific number to confirm that a text message is legitimate. Since phone numbers are not permitted in the community for a variety of reasons, the SMS numbers have been removed from this thread. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

If you receive an SMS asking you to reply with a 1 or 2 to confirm the legitimacy of the payment, it is likely from PayPal. However, responding is completely optional. If the transaction is not authorized, you can also go to your PayPal account and report unauthorized activity there. If you ever have any doubts, it's always safer to log in to your account from a fresh browser window at PayPal.com and get the lay of the land from there.

If a transaction is in fact legitimately authorized, it is not necessary to respond to confirm it for the transaction to go through. However, confirming the transaction is helpful to the system to recognize what authorized activity in your account looks like.

I hope this information helps. "

Caller: Text - Fake PayPal

I received a text from this number regarding a payment I made in USD to a sheila in the US. Nope. The number the text came into is my work number and is not connected with any PayPal account. It's dodgy to the m.a.x.
