Have confirmed with Telstra that this is not one of their numbers and that is in fact a scam so they have been reported

I just got a call from a private number saying they were from Telstra and were going to disconnect my internet because of some "Illegal hacking files". I asked the guy for a number to call him back on and they gave me (03) 9028 8485. I suspect it's a scam because I only started a new internet plan with Telstra a few days ago.

I just received a call from someone claiming to be from Telstra Bigpond regarding a virus on my computer even issuing me with an employee no. This is however a scam regarding viruses etc on my computer. How ever once contacting the actual Bigpond office they confirmed that it was a scam and the silly person that called me even gave me a telephone no to call back on.

Also received a call from these people on a very bad line. Claiming to be from Telstra Technical Support calling due to my computer downloading a hacking virus without my knowledge and indicating my internet would be disconnected if I didn't follow their directions. When I asked them to verify who they were they gave me a Customer Licence Number and asked me to type it into the Run window on my computer. When I insisted I would not make changes to my computer before I verified their identity they gave me a Telstra Employee ID Number and told me to call Technical Support on (03) 9028 8485 to confirm their identity.I called Bigpond Technical Support on the regular number and was told the phone number was not valid and they had been receiving a number of enquiries about the legitimacy of these calls. Apparently if you follow the instructions of these scammers, files disappear from your computer so be aware. Telstra / Bigpond will only call you for Technical Support if you request the call. Their usual means of contact is via SMS or email.

Also got a call from this number. Got an uneasy vibe from them, so I told them that i didn't own a computer and they just hanged up. Most definitely a scam, do not do anything they request, they aren't from Telstra. So glad I researched the number as its verified that it is a scam.

We just took a call from an Indian sounding man who identified himself as Daniel Brown from Telstra, calling to notify us that our internet connection was to be disconnected tomorrow because we had downloaded malware to the Telstra servers. The call was hard to hear as he was speaking from a very noisy call centre. We asked for his phone number and he gave us this one (03) 9028 8485). We had him on speakerphone, my husband commented that he didn't sound like a Daniel Brown, and asked where was he calling from, then the man said something that sounded like 'Jafra', and 'South Africa'. Call was then abruptly terminated.

Thanks everyone, I just received the call and googled the return number to get your comments. They're obviously still calling.

I received yet another call from a woman with an indian accent claiming to be from Telstra Bigpond Technical Department and saying that my internet connection was going to be disconnected because of files and folders on my computer that were sending out alert reports to their server, and that this was causing problems in Telstra's network. I immediately recognised it as completely nonsensical rubbish. We all know that Telstra does not care what we put on our computers, and anything that increases traffic for Telstra makes Telstra happy. Telstra has the ability to block any type of traffic at their routers and so nothing on my computer is going to cause them enough problems to induce them to stop my service and try to fix my computer. She gave me the phone number (03) 9028 8485 as the number I could call her back on if we were disconnected. (I tried it later, but it is an answering machine.) Of course she read the usual script asking me to open event viewer to prove that my computer was having trouble. And then she wanted me to open a command window and type assoc to list the file associations. She claimed that the second last entry in the list .zfsendtotarget=CLSID\... showed the license number of my computer. Of course it doesnt, it is the same number that you will find on millions of computers running Windows if you query the list of file associations. But I just kept saying "Yes", and "OK" knowing that keeping her on the line was running up her phone bill and stopping her from swindling somebody else. Eventually she told me that she would put me through to a senior technical person who would solve the problems on my computer. I was transferred to a young indian sounding chap who also claimed to be from Telstra. His first question was to ask me if I had any questions. I said "can you please prove to me that you are actually from Telstra". He must have been having a bad day, because he immediately launched into a tirade of foul abuse and insults directed at me. I asked him how he could sleep at night knowing that his business was scamming people. He responded that he was making money and that money came in every day from the National Australia Bank and I should not worry about how he got it. I eventually got sick of listening to his abuse and put the phone down on the desk to let him run his phone bill up further talking to himself.
