I have had the same experience as Trish though the technician was coming on Friday. As I live in a rural area, I would certainly know (and so would the town) if the optical fibre was coming to town. Beware, this is a con.

Called on a Saturday around lunch time. Told me he was from Telstra and NBN was not available in my area. Foreign male, on a very bad, noisy line. Difficult understanding him without the interference. Wanted me to sign up for NBN; said the techs will be in on Wednesday to hook up our NBN cable and that we would then lose the Telstra copper service. Didn't think NBN was due in our area for a while and certainly no work being done around here for it. On checking the NBN site, it is PLANNED for our area in 12 months time, but not definite even then. When I said I was aware there were lots of providers for the NBN and I wasn't going to agree to something I could not hear or understand because of the accent and bad line, he told me they were affiliated with Apple - ??? Told him to call me back when he could talk to me on a descent service. Sounds like a scam to me!! Blocked his number.

They just call and there was no one on the end, like an auto dialler with a lag time and they haven't realised it's answered. I suspect it's a scam because it wouldn't let me dial the number to find out who it was. The fact they called me at work on a non-listed federal government phone number makes me believe it's just an auto-dialler dialling numbers looking for suckers.

Scam telling me that NBN is coming to my suburb. Called Telstra to verify and they said it was for sure a scam.
