Caller: I don’t know

A lady with an Indian accent told me that I’ve got an Amazon Prime account (perhaps by mistakenly clicking the wrong button) and asked if I would like to cancel it. I said yes I’d like to cancel it. She proceeded to guide me to AppStore and tried to lure me to download AnyDesk Remote Access. By then I confirmed that it’s a scammer call and rejected her ‘help’.

Upon Googling the app, apparently ‘scammers have been known to use AnyDesk and similar remote desktop software to obtain full access to the victims' computer by impersonating a technical support person. The victim is asked to download and install AnyDesk and provide the attackers with access.’

Beware!

Male with Indian accent said someone was fraudulently trying to access my Netflix and did I want to cancel my account. Then said they were trying to buy a $500 gift card and I should cancel the account. I ended the call saying I'd get my daughter to contact Netflix directly.

One thing to please keep in mind when being called by unknown phone numbers is to never answer with "Yes" or "No", as the scammers can use the victim's voice to access other items like bank accounts and who knows what else. It is probably best to either hang up quickly or let all unknown calls go to voice mail.

Not the Amazon scam mentioned in connection with the same phone number above, the caller with a heavy Indian accent wanted to know if I had any exhaust fans in various rooms of my home. It seems like he was attempting to leverage off an actually legitimate Victorian Government scheme for Weather Sealing homes to save energy!!! After I told him we didn't need this, he called back almost immediately and tried it again. Would not take the hint to hang up, and kept insisting he was trying to do me a favour and was a legitimate representative from the Victorian Government. Why this type of offer requires the utterly dodgy approach of calling my number, which is listed on the "Do Not Call" register in any case, is a bit of a mystery and feels so much more like a scam call centre approach.

Indian woman - saying from NBN - that my files are showing as being corrupted!! Seriously who would fall for that .. really. Lots of background noise, other people speaking as well, so the illusion of a call centre environment.

Claimed to be from visa security about international charges. Asked which bank I was with and they didn’t know and hung up once they knew they were caught.
