If someone calls you from this number it could very well be a scam as they have spoofed an American Express fraud line. Ringing to this number yourself, however, will be legitimate.

Definitely a fraud. Called AMX who checked and asked me to forward to their fraud email which they gave me. Told me NOT to call either 1800 number or the land line.

Caller: AMEX This number is legit. You'll find it on AMEX's website: https://www.americanexpress.com/au/credit-cards/membership-benefits/service-and-security/fraud-protection/
I also called AMEX on 1300 364 931 before I found this page and they confirmed the number is legit. People who say it's a scam are full of it.

Caller: AMEX This is legit. I got a text from the usual AMEX number that gives me weekly spend update saying I had an unverified transaction and asking to call this number. I called the number on the back of my AMEX card and verified this is AMEX, don't be alarmed. The call taker organized a replacement card straight away.

Caller: American Express It's American express verifying a fraudulent transaction. They knew about other legitimate transactions on the account so it's definitely them. The 02 9271 prefix is the same beginning numbers as their fraud hotline on the back of the card as well.
