I didn't say anything when I answered. I could hear the sounds of a call centre in the background. It hung up after about 30 seconds. Looking at the information here, it is probably just as well the person didn't say anything because my tolerance of these arsholes has hit rock bottom and they would have got an earful!!!

Caller: Vik This is indeed Optus as I was waiting for a call from them. Maybe it was spoofed at some point around the time of the data breach. Maybe it's still happening. Yes they will ask your name, DOB, postcode and one-time code but after that followed one of the most understanding and pleasant customer service experiences I have ever received regarding an overdue amount I was having trouble paying. Yes it is a noisy call centre, yes the English could be slightly better but damn I am impressed with the service and empathy I received from Vik.

Caller said he was from a company called 24/7 with Optus, checking that I was happy with my Optus service so far. He knew my first name, which was the only piece of specific information he had about me. Even though he said he was affiliated with Optus, I didn't trust the call and did not give any personal details or specific answers. Will be blocking this number.

Caller: Optus I ordered an nbn plan and got called by this number. I missed the call and then received an sms saying ‘we need to speak to you about your order, reference number # and call back 1300’ etc. I called back and it was a noisy call centre background, gave my references number and was asked for drivers licence and Medicare details. I gave them and then needed to confirm my address and was texted a link to the Optus website (legit seeming) to input my payment details. I then hung up because I was getting suspicious as I got put on hold multiple times and was getting uncomfortable, they wouldn’t answer my questions about why they needed my details again.
Called up Optus tonight through the number on their website and the first person could not confirm whether they called me or not earlier, but was happy to complete my nbn order and would get back in touch with the sales expert to complete the order. I then called back again and got a different operator who confirmed that Optus called me this morning. Because I did not complete the order with them on the phone this morning, she could do it for me now, I was texted a link that opened a secure verification window within the Optus app on my phone (much more secure!) and she completed the order for me and I instantly received an order confirmation.
The whole experience seemed very scammy and worrying, but it seems that it was legit for me. Judging by this website, it seems that sometimes this number is legit and sometimes it isn’t. I wouldn’t go through with the order completion through this number again just incase, rather just call up the official Optus number on their website and they should be able to provide you with another way to complete the order.

Caller: Optus Some of these calls can actually be legitimate. I requested to move over to Optus from Telstra (wasn't going to pay $62 month for my future phone bills with telstra) and received a call from this number.
I answered it knowing Optus could call in relation to porting over & my confirmation email from Optus said it would be a number starting with "(02) 9174 xxxx." Dude was thankfully legit. Confirmed some of my details (just my name and date of birth) & sent through my eSim activation stuff. My number was ported over from Telstra (Telstra notifying me of the porting too) and I'm set up in the Optus app so it can be a legit call.
I'm guessing scammers spoof the number because they know this number is used by Optus legitimately.
Please be careful if answering though!
