I ignored the call. To everyone: Be careful. Look up the real telephone number of "social research centre". Call them and ask if they are calling people randomly. Someone might be using the name "social research centre' to trick you.

Caller: they said cancer research

like others on here, i got a text a couple of days before.
when they called, i said i wasn’t interested and hung up. the the c word then called again. take the hint. ended up blocking the number.

not sure what the point of the do not call register is. the people most of us want to block for our privacy are exempt, or scammers that don’t care.

Answered the call but caller listened and then hung up.

Then received a call asking if I had purchased products with tobacco and what state I lived in. Said no and they hung up. Was a woman on the phone.

I called back and the guy said that they were randomly generating numbers from ACT and NSW. He said somthing about a university doing reserch on public health from the goverment. All they asked was whether I lived in the ACT or NSW and whether I had ever smoked tobacco. When I said that I hadn't he thanked me for my time and then we hung up.

Be very cautious probably a phishing scam asked for info about me and would not take no for an answer

I called back and got the health and social research which gets information on education and health. I hung up after hearing that but I did get a text message earlier saying This message is on behalf of the Cancer Institute NSW, part of the NSW Government. In the coming days, the Social Research Centre will call to see if you can take part in an important health study. So I guess it was for that.
