Keeps leaving recorded messages to call back. Won't do this after reading the other comments.

Yes, I've had three calls from this number today, two yesterday. I let all go to the answering machine. Threats of arrest if I don't contact them. Why are the police not doing anything about them?

I had 5 voice messages from a man with a South African accent on my landline over several days this week asking me to call back on this number regarding a lawsuit for tax evasion and tax fraud. A total scam. The caller display showed number withheld.

Leaves an urgent-sounding message a few times a day on my answering machine (which I use to filter all calls, as there seems to be a never-ending stream of scam and begging calls). All I hear is more or less a blunt command, in a foreign accent, to ring the above number, and I assumed it was some sort of scam. I have rung the number (with my ID blocked), but each time I get an engaged signal.

This is definitely a tax scam caller. As a Registered BAS Agent and Tax Agent it is painfully obvious this is a scam.
Regrettably, there are naïve people out there who do fall for this scam. One of my clients (a very trusting elderly gentleman) almost fell for it but decided to check with me first. The approach is a numbers game, the scammers may make 100 calls and get 3 possible "hits", out of each 10 hits there will be 1 payoff. As they are using computerised communications packages, the scammers can, with just 3 to 5 people, have the potential to make over 5,000 calls in one day. They operate around the clock targeting affluent countries in each time zone. Those numbers equate to about 15 successful scams per day. Unfortunately crime does seem to pay.

If legit the person would have identified them self and addressed the person they were calling, e.g. Mr Smith, this is Tom Jones from the ATO we have a matter to discuss with you... Another thing, if a legal or tax matter you would not be receiving a phone call but a registered letter in all likelihood. Watch out for non-Australian voices calling about legal matters. Will be a scam. I wouldn't be surprised if the call originated from outside the country and routed through an Aust exchange.

Only part of their recorded message two days in a row, asking me or "my concerned attorney" to call this number. The message is a recording as the heavily accented voice uses exactly the same words with same tone and inflection each time.

Scammers who hung up when I returned the call after someone left a message advising they are a Detective in my territories legal jurisdiction and threatening arrest by local police. I called them back and advised them I had reported their number as a tax scam and they hung up.

Tried me twice - exactly the same words each time, South African accent the words "law suite" and "interested attorney" bit of a giveaway in the land of Aus.

Message left on my answering machine, itself a recording, pretending to be from ??? Taxation Office (first bit not recorded as my answering machine must have played its message). Tries to frighten me with tax avoidance and tax fraud.

Another message on the answering machine, no name given, don't ask for you by name and saying they are from the fraud section of the tax department. Report to the authorities. Overseas call through Sydney exchange number
