A voice message with American accent from Australia Taxation office asked me to return the call before they take further action against me. SCAM..........

These calls are usually routed through international servers. While they appear as a local number they aren't. Even if the foreign country shut them down they would be back up in hours at most. Privacy laws also make it hard to check numbers without a warrant which are not easy to get.

It's a tax scam

Recorded message, Nicki Johnson, American accent, speaks very slowly and deliberately, says she is from the Australian Taxation Office. Says very urgent, call back in the next second, or have my "attorney of record" call back. Grouped the number differently from the way we do it in Australia - (02) 8310 6861 not (02) 8310 6861. Has called again and left the same message on my voicemail.

Very obviously a scam, so I did nothing. Clearly an active one though. Don't be fooled.It seems the same one keeps popping up, but the number can vary. I imagine if you called back they would ask you to send money to avoid being arrested, or some such. Fortunately the real tax office doesn't operate this way.

Same scam message received twice in the last couple of weeks. Voice Message left on machine said it was "Nicky Johnson" from "taxation office". Sounds dodgey, I am certain if the tax office wanted to contact me they would easily be able to!

Scam call..... how they can exist in this intelligent world...

Same complaint as others. American accent stating that they are the ATO and asking me to return the call.

Why isn't the government or telco's shutting these scams down?? They get reported and nothing happens to them they keep operating, reminds me of utopia..

same as the above comment from Sue, voice message left saying call from ATO to return the call if not severe action will be taken against me ?? i rang back on same no. and after one ring it goes on busy tone.

Received a voice message, saying exactly what Sue said in the previous post. Big SCAM.... Avoid!!!!
