Person calls everyday and leaves a threatening message about a legal matter. Message threatens that we will suffer the consequences if we do not reply.

This is a scam. I have registered a report with the ATO and that have assured me that it is not one of their numbers and forwarded a report to police. Do not respond to the call.

yes this morning likewise received a threatening call. An Indian with a Yank accent guy saying the call is from ATO headquarters (suspect point 1 - no body in Australia will use ATO headquarters - just plain Australian Tax Office will strike fears in tax payers).

And that they have register a criminal case against your name (didn't even specify the name - suspect point 2) for tax evasion and tax fraud (make up your mind which is which? suspect point 3).

Take get your case file pls call (02) 8310 4113 immediately (hello??!! any self respecting ATO officer will state clearly the case file number so the person can follow up easily - suspect point 4).

Scams are designed to be very generic sounding yet convincing. But like the "Microsoft calling you" scam, this one is a major fail.

Received the same sort of call twice this week. I consider it a scam.
I. man with Indian/American accent
2. Women with American accent
States that they have registered a criminal case against my name for tax evasion and asked if I had the services of a criminal lawyer.
I asked where the call came from, the response was from Canberra Australia. (a dead giveaway)
Conversation ended with "Have a great day"

A person with an odd American accent is leaving exactly the same threatening message as the other people in this thread have got, every day. This is clearly a scam but it gave my elderly relative a fright

It's a scam and I've reported it to the ATO.

If you have any question if this is legit, phone the ATO on 132 861 and they will let you know.

I also have had an American style of speaking male leave a message saying if I don't call back I will suffer the consequences of legal action. At the end of the call the man said have a blessed day (sounds American).

Claims to be from ATO - Wants money to be deposited into a Western Australia Bank Account as it is with a Debt Collector

My elderly mother received this as a voicemail message today after returning from an operation from hospital. Same message was received, the person left a threatening message saying that she would be taken to a commonwealth court for a criminal matter of tax evasion if she did not return the call within 48 hours.

We are constantly getting threatening messages from this number. Do not respond
