This number called many times (12-15). They pretended to be OPTUS and asked for personal information. They are probably part of an identity theft ring.

Not so much a comment about this number, but telemarketers in general.
If they are not from this country and you don't want them to call back, don't simply hang up or put your number on the do not call register, be EXTREMELY racist. It works for me.
Personally, I don't care where someone is from or what they believe, but I use racism ALL THE TIME to upset these mongrels.
Only problem is, I enjoy doing it, but they don't call back, so I gotta wait for a new call centre to open up to do a new round.

Sample complaints we have found for (02) 8198 3820

NH

I kept getting missed calls from (02) 8198 3820. I rang back one day and found it was for ICT (Telemarketers). When they rang yesterday, they told me they were from Optus and wanted to ask a few questions to make my mobile phone experience better. So they asked if I liked going to movies etc. Then they asked if I could "confirm my identity" by giving them my full name, date of birth and address. I immediately hung up. If they are from Optus and THEY'RE calling me, they should have all this info on the screen in front of them surely. So I rang Optus to ask them to block the number. The guy who answered said he can't coz the telemarketing company has been engaged by Optus. So the original caller wasn't actually an Optus employee (which they claimed they were!!!). He then said if I didn't want to be called by them, I could "change my number". I told him that's ridiculous. I told the guy that I didn't want my number given out like that. He said he'd put a note in my file. But then I got another call yesterday afternoon from that same number! I immediately told the lady (non-Australian accent) that I had informed Optus I didn't want these calls. She said she would take my name off their list, and that it could take UP TO 30 DAYS to take effect!!!I suggest leaving a complaint with the telecommunications industry ombudsman. I have already done so.http://www.tio.com.au/ComplaintForm/ComplaintFormS1.asp

Hey guys,

Just thought I'd pass on my experiences this evening with this phone number and it's Filipino call centre. Misinformation leading to the fear of misinformation from their employer. Always be polite to the call centre goons, they are just the foot soldiers, that's step 1. Never acknowledge that you are the person they are calling for, and instead counter with a "sorry, can you tell me what the call is regarding?"...

I felt quite satisfied with my efforts in dealing with them tonight...

1. Ask for the ABN of the company. Confused response spells foreign entity. Proceed with misinformation.
2. Asked them to spell the name of the business for me. Was provided with "Sykes". Immediately ask to speak to a supervisor straight away after denying that they were speaking to the person who's name was registered against the phone
3. Ask the supervisor for his full name. Get him to spell it. Spell it back to him, so he knows that he's had it written down.
4. Tell the supervisor I'm actually an Australian business lawyer who works for the person they assumed they were calling, and that it was a business phone.
5. Politely inform him about the personal liability he could incur on himself, or any one of his staff members could be incurring on themselves by giving their full name and then proceeding to sell goods or services to someone in Australia without having the proper course of business tax paid (yes, it's b***s***, but how many callcentre goons in the Philippines know Australian tax law?). I told him that he could be detained for tax evasion if he were to ever visit Australia, if any one of his customers were to get his name and report the business practices to the tax office.
6. At this point, "J.R. Sto. Domingo" got noticeably panicky and asked if I wanted to be put on the "Do Not Call" register. I attempt to calm him by saying that firstly I haven't bought anything from him, and secondly I am actually concerned that his employer has not informed him of the liability he may be incurring upon himself, and that - rather than report him - I just want to let him know about the Australian tax laws and how they could affect him if he were to ever visit.
7. Ask if there is anyone higher up in his organisation I could speak to regarding this matter

**15 minute interlude on hold/speaker phone while I'm watching TV**

8. "Christine Del Rosario-Dorado" picks up the phone and informs me that she is the business unit manager. I give her the same spiel as "J.R. Sto. Domingo" and ask if she was aware of the Australian tax law implications of the way they were doing business, and if there were any Australian contacts for their business. She sounds as panicky as the team leader, and informs me that she was not aware of this. I tell her that I am just trying to help her as I believe they are being taken advantage of by their employer, and that they should be asking serious questions of them.

I was provided with what appears to be a solid lead: Carynne Atkins (and a 1300 number I haven't tried yet)

An initial google search of the name leads me to the ICT people that are mentioned, and that she is the complaints officer. This goes to prove that I scared them. Am I evil or is this a good way to turn the tables? Opinions?

Kathy

please don't call me everyday!

Do not call list or not, if you have signed a contract with optus or are on a pre paid plan they would have asked if you wish to receive updates about deals etc. This will have flagged your account with a marketing indicator advising that you wish to receive such calls.

Its bloody sneaky and unethical but entirely legal.

Contact Optus direct and 'opt out' of receiving any marketing information.
