From the Inspector General Defence - 9 Sep 14
Dear Colleagues,
I am writing to you in regards to information provided to my office this morning by a Defence official concerning a potential credit card scam.
The Official advised that his partner was contacted by phone at home yesterday afternoon by a male caller with a possible Indian accent. The caller advised they were from a banking institute and were urgently seeking advice about a $700 overseas transaction that was being processed on the official’s Diners card. The caller identified the officials’ residential post code and sought to confirm whether the official was a Commonwealth government employee. The caller identified himself as “Anthony Loat’ and provided a phone number of (02) 8103 4138.
The official later contacted this number which went to a business voice mail system requiring a four digit PIN code.
The official later received another telephone call that evening from a male caller who identified himself as a representative from ‘Visa’ at ‘the bank’ and was seeking information about an overseas transaction. The caller discontinued the telephone call when the official sought information from him to verify his bona fides. The official subsequently called Visa who confirmed the tactics of the caller were consistent with a current widespread credit card scam being broadly employed against credit card holders.
It is apparent that the caller(s) were drawing on limited information in an attempt to confirm credit card holder details to fraudulently compromise a credit card account.
The Defence Corporate Credit Card Support cell has been updated with this information which will be posted on their website.
I am therefore seeking your assistance in distributing this information across your Groups and Services to alert Defence personnel to the techniques currently being employed in this credit card scam.
yours sincerely,
Michael Callan Inspector General Defence
