We included "caller I.D." in our Telstra package and bought a cheap "answering machine" from an electronics retailer. For the little bit extra ($) it's worth it. Calls from this type of source will hang up as soon as they realize that they are being invited to leave a message. Genuine calls are either I.D.'d, so we can pick up, or leave a message, so we can return the call at our convenience. 9 times out of 10, we don't have to get up from our chairs as a result.

Called twice this evening, first time my husband answered and no-one was on the other end. Second time let it go to messagebank and no message left. Of course it has to be around dinnertime.

Keep calling late evening, even at half past midnight. I no longer answer calls where I don't recognise the number. They leave voice messages with just the sound of typing on. I am on the do not call register, but as usual this is ignored

Recorded message said don't hang up, this is a survey. Press 1 if you are enrolled to vote......so I pressed 1 and it went on and on with the same thing. Will try to get rid of the message; I also have a silent number and am on the do-not-call register.

Just received a call from above #, We are on the "Don't Call Register" and last year went on a silent #, both pretty useless, sent a letter to our National Carrier seeking clarification on WHY they can't stop these annoying little S^*T heads calling, the response is as follows:- So in affect check your phone and "if" you don't know the number, don't answer as this appears to be the only way of not being interrupted, or purchase the phone(s) as per the below information, not the ideal situation, as I explained to Telstra we can put a person on the moon but they don't seem to be able to get on top of technical issues when it comes to addressing these menacing groups!!!! Hope this helps. Firstly, these Telstra or Microsoft Technical Support scammers and the other most prevalent scam calls at the moment: Accident Insurance, Australian Taxation Office or regarding Solar Panels, etc, are usually using auto-diallers just hitting particular number ranges e.g. (02) 4257 0000 to (02) 4257 2000 so therefore it calls active numbers, disconnected numbers, numbers that have never existed and silent lines. We see a lot of these calls over a short period and then they move on only to return at a later date. So even a silent line is no protection against these callers. Silent line was added to your service 09/10/2015 so therefore this will also not protect your from those that use databases or buy number lists from brokers as they use the last known publicly listed information. Your number with your details will still always be the last known publically advertised number. The only scenario when a phone number’s details will not appear on one of these databases e.g. reverseaustralia.com (listing below) or person lookup is if the number you are allocated has never been allocated to anyone ever before. If you have a phone number and make it silent AFTER it will already be out there.
I note you advise you have registered with the Governments Do Not Call register (DNCR). Registration will stop only genuine telemarketers. It will not stop opinion-polling or market research, charities and facilities such as your bank, phone/internet service providers and your utility companies all of which can still call you - although you can request to them that they do not contact you via phone. Neither will it stop scammers as these are not genuine callers.
There are now handsets available to rent or purchase, in fixed or cordless, that are capable of filtering nuisance or scam calls. The Telstra Call Guardian will actively screen your calls for you. This phone was designed very specifically for nuisance calls and is proving very useful particularly for our customers who receive a lot of annoying and worrying scam calls. • Incorporates multi-award winning Qaltel Call Blocking technology. • Filter incoming calls and decide whether to accept or reject them. • Blocks up to 1,000 numbers while your saved contacts get straight through* • Quick access Call Block button.
It can be set to work in “Announce” mode so that a call doesn’t even reach you until caller announces who they are and press the # key. This mode can be left on permanently if you like so callers would be greeted by a recorded voice announcement asking them to state their name then press the # key. If caller did that, and for example says “it’s George” # the call will then ring through on your handset showing ‘announced call” on your display. You pick up the call and then hear who is calling then you have the choice to accept, send the caller to the answering machine or you can hit the BLOCK button which will send THAT number straight to a block list. If THAT number calls again, the caller will hear, “Calls to this number are being screened by Telstra Call Guardian, the person you are calling is not accepting your call. Please hang up”. To avoid friends and family having to announce themselves, you just add their numbers to your contact “safe” list and their calls will ring straight through to your phone. This phone was designed very specifically for nuisance calls and is proving very useful particularly for our customers who receive a lot of annoying and worrying scam calls. Their hang up robot calls can’t get through because automated calls can’t announce themselves or hit the # key so it stops them reaching people so is our greatest defence now against scammers. I have attached some information on them for you or anyone you may feel this is useful to. These handsets are now the most powerful defence against unwanted callers and customers who have been using them (or similar call blocking handsets) get the satisfaction of feeling in control, particularly those who were receiving a high volume of these types of calls.
I hope some this information has been useful to you. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if I can be of any further assistance.
