Caller: Scam - pretending to be Optus WARNING: Do not accept their calls
This number called me today, claiming to be from Optus. The caller said they were part of the Optus sales team, and that they could see that my contract has expired and they have some new offers. In my case this information was accurate but I wasn’t able to talk, so I said I’d have a look at plans online and call them back if I needed. Big mistake, huge.
Since that call I’ve had had nearly a hundred calls from random numbers saying I’d called them. I suspected my number had been spoofed - this is where fraudsters use a copy of your number to disguise theirs, so instead of your phone saying +696548297790000 (Romania) it’ll say 0417******. There is a market for selling genuine numbers for spoofing.
I contacted Optus and they’ve confirmed that (02) 8049 0847 is not one of their numbers, and their fraud team is investigating the situation, but right now the only solution is to change numbers (which I’ve had since 2003)
If you are one of the people on this page who also believed this was Optus and have provided personal info including drivers license, passport or IMEI numbers report this immediately as this was likely a phishing attempt.
TLDR version: Don’t answer, not Optus, scam caller.

Said they were Optus but asked for personal details pretty much straigh away, claimed to be cleaning up outdated details their data-base. I didn't provide any information. Also said they would send a verifying text but didn't. Probably scamming for personal information, please beware.

Caller: Optus A guy from Optus called Rony. Seemed legit. He had all the details of my current plan and seeing as my contract had expired (and I had paid off the device) he could recontract me for a new phone or I could continue with my current phone month to month for a lower price.
All seemed good except apparently Optus need my Driver's License or Passport Number to perform a credit check despite the fact I've paid every bill for the past 2 years on time. Not sure why a credit check would be needed. They conducted one before entering the contract so doesn't make sense to me at all.

Asked you for your birthdate to verify it's you and then, without giving it, you instead asked him for it and he gave it to you?! That is definitely a scam and would breach so many privacy issues.
Folks, you'll note a lot of these posts saying it's not a scam. Just presume these are the scammers trying to instill trust.

I answered but there's no reply. I waited until the line was terminated by the caller. Then I searched for this no. online and voila... BTW my Optus contract is ending soon. I have been receiving anonymous calls lately. If it's Optus calling, then good luck to them because the last thing I'll do is to renew my contract with them just for the sake of retaliation.

Called saying they were offering me online trading and a new source of income. I said this number was private and asked how they got it. The rude lady on the other end told me "Sometimes people forget when they sign up to things". I called her rude and hung up

Caller: Optus I rang Optus to confirm the number was legit and yes it was their Optus Sales team. The initial phone call seemed very informal and requested information on my account, so I was skeptical and felt it was a Scam. I provided feedback to Optus to improve the legitimacy of their sales call.
