Got a call from the "Australian Reclaim Expert Department" informing me that I have been overcharged by my bank for the sum of $4288, and that they were going to help me reclaim my money - the scam has just stared, so I will follow on to the next part of the call, when they call back, to have some more fun with them!

Had a call from this number. Person with heavy Indian accent - sounded very much like a scam. I asked him to repeat a few times (more to p#$$ him off) then he just hung up on me.

We have caller ID and the call came as Private. Woman with Indian accent called to say that my bank owed me $4,288 (same patter as to those above). I was asked to ring John Adams at the Australian Reclaim Expert Department on (02) 8007 3795. She said she would send me a bank cheque and asked what type of ID I had. She knew my name and address and her speech was well rehearsed. How do we expose such scammers?

My mother got one of these calls and I found this page by googling the phone numbers she was given.

Mum was asked if she knew that her bank (they knew who she banked with apparently) was using Indian call centres. She said she did know. She was told that because of the class action taken by the Australian Govt against banks over charging fees, she was entitled to $4288 (they seem to quote this number a lot, Google tells me) but to get the money paid to her bank account she needed to buy a Western Union transfer for $299 and pay it to Michael Kurenau in India.

She paid the $299.

She finally baulked when they called back to ask if she had paid the $299, and when she said she had, they said she now had to go to the PO and pay $399 to cover her share of the legal costs. Upon payment of that they would pay the money into her account - please give the details. She insisted she wanted a cheque, so as not to give the account details - she was concerned by now. They said they had an operator in the area and would deliver the cheque immediately upon her paying the legal fees. They then described her house to her and she became even more nervous.

She then went up to her bank and was told that wasn't the way bank worked. The bank staff were concerned for her, but could do nothing, so mum cancelled all her cards.

The only question she had was how did they know who she banked with, but really, they could have looked through her letter box and seen any number of bank envelopes with the bank logo, her name and address on it. The rest of it can be done on the net anywhere in the world.

The names they used were Jenny Wilson ph (02) 8006 8931
Finance managers name is Mark Davies ph (02) 8007 3795
Name to pay in India Michael Kurenau.

Don't fall for it. Don't pay them. Tell your elderly parents about this type of scam and make sure they call you FIRST. And talk them through the logic: why would your bank ask you to paythem through Western Union via the Post Office? Why wouldn't they ask you to attend your local branch? And didn't they say they owed you money? Get them to take it off what they owe you and pay you the difference. And finally Why would you want to pay your bank anything extra anyway! They already get you for fees and interest. That alone should have rung alarm bells.
