I worked at Jenolan during the fire of 1955/6. The fire had been burning for several months in the wild dog range Then on a Saturday morning I, along with my wife, drove to Lithgow to stock up on food returning that afternoon we could hardly see though the smoke - At Caves House all women and children were being evacuated to farms around Edith & Oberon. That night we set a back burn Bill Marks, Frank Richardson and myself. The fire was burning all around the pig farm house. We were told that the pig farmer's and a wife were still in the house. Frank accompanied by me drove down to the pig farm in his Landrover. Trees were burning all around but the farmers wife refused to leave. We carried her to the car and made her stay there while the two farmers sat in the back. I ran ahead of the rover cutting burning trees that had fallen across the road, with a chain saw, smoke and heat was almost unbearable,.- After depositing our load at cave house; we returned to our fire duties a couple of miles up Jenolan Caves Hill - photos and other information available at jacksoncolin @ shaw.ca - I am living in Canada and have written a book "Jenolan Caves Inside and Out' mostly history on my years their and other interesting happenings.
