We've just returned home to an message left on the answering machine by John Matthews (Indian accent) who told me or my attorney to phone (02) 6140 3480 as I had committed a serious offence against the ATO and the CDPP. I tried phoning back (3 times) and nobody was there. Then I decided to google the phone number and name and found this site (thank goodness). I will now ignore it but am wondering what I can do to stop this fellow.

does anyone know how to stop these scammers.ive have had up to 6 phone calls a day and are about to cancel my phone.phoned telstra to see if they had any answers to the problem.apart from pay a $6 monthly fee,go private,and record the time date etc of each phone call .it should be up to telstra to provide answers for all their customers.they all have an indian accent whether re ATO,your computer needs fixing.this must be very stressful for the elderley and its about time this is stopped!!!!! anyone have any ideas?????

I also had the same call as above, although just prior to listening to the voicemail I had a call, again someone with an Indian type accent, who were trying to sell compensation/insurance. I wonder if they are related?

had a garbled phone message fro a John Matthews who said he was representing the ATO, and that I was being investigated for tax evasion, left this ph no 00290984470, and after many attempts could not reach this no...glad I googled his name and the ATO.

John Matthews has now come to carsales through email, willing to purchase my vehicle without seeing it or even speaking to me. They asked for PayPal details to transfer the money into!!

I also had John Matthews (Indian accent) from the ATO, CDPP, however with a different number of (02) 8317 1126. I tried calling back but the number was not available. Then I googled his name and this is where it led me (thank goodness). I will also ignore this call. I would only imagine the stress if an elderly person received this call.

Same loudly spoken rude message from an Indian male named John Matthews asking me to phone back on (02) 9831 1126 as I had apparently committed fraud against the ATO. What an arse. Didn't bother phoning back. I'm sure he'll call again and I look forward to our conversation.

Another number he used was (02) 8317 1126. The call could not be connected.
Thought it was a scam so googled the details and found this.

Answering message left from "John Matthews", from The ATO on fraud and evasion case asking to get my attorney to call immediately to (02) 6152 8611. Didn't ask for anyone by name. Call back had a long delay before engaged tone. I thought, the ATO hasn't sent anything by mail or notice of a problem. Searched and found this site.
Thanks to other contributor's has helped put my mind at rest. Now annoyed that these blatant scams still go on.

The no# the called was a private number and there was a voice mail "Its John Matthews from the Australian Taxation Office Commonwealth Australia, in regards of your business account have committed a serious offence. Which you need to contact us on (02) 6145 2253, contact us immediately to speak with this matter"

Cannot remember word for word, but this is pretty much what that voicemail said to us.

So i Google the number and had found out I was not the only one. Hate these bloody a**holes

Received a call from John Matthews at Director of Public Prosecutions on behalf of the ATO. He said there was a penalty recorded with the ATO at this address and that someone from our office or our attorney needed to contact asap on (02) 6140 3480.

Not this number, but (02) 6140 3419, same story. I had a bit of a chuckle about it, and contacted a mate at the ATO who advised that whilst the ATO don't as yet have it on their website as a scam, it clearly is just that. Funny thing is, they'd be more credible using an Indian name: the ATO & other APS organisations employ quite a few people with that background (ATO in parramatta for example). Still, I imagine some people could be taken in by it, so beware.

The other number used was (02) 6100 3029 which also was not connected.
