I had the same experience as above. I had a message on my answering machine saying that I had been investigated for fraud and that I would need to attend court. I rang the number, spoke to an indian guy named "officer Williams" and he told me that I had been audited and was being charged with tax evation - I asked if I could get my accountant to speak to him and he said they only speak with the client, not tax return agents. I said, how do i know this isn't a scam and he said "we'll just continue with legal proceedings" and hung up. - SCAM!!!

Its a scam number.

I don't think they have learnt there lesson as i have received a call from this number today but from officer Peter Williams. Once he could not identify the actual first name of the person he was after i figured it for a scam.

Same thing just happened to me. Called the number back and it was engaged. This one had a south african accent and was pretty hard to understand. All sounded scripted. The ATO NEVER leave messages on phones at all and verify who YOU are before taking anything any further.
