Returned call to this number. They said it was ATO about tax fraud. They said my name and old address I had. I asked for them to prove who they were. The Indian accent guy said he does not need to and then hung up.

This happened to me today, I googled the number while on the phone and this site came up so I realised it was a scam, but he was very efficient. I think this needs to be reported to the police.

Here's my story:

This number called me and said I owed 3000$ on tax fraud and they could help me by me supplying credit card payment now else the police would be coming to take me to caught. It was rather intimidating and I'm wise to internet scams but this phone one almost caught me. The guys name was "John Wright", an Indian accent.

Just had the call as well, terrible computer generated voice saying pretty much exactly the same as everyone has been saying. Major scam! The Australian Federal Police or the Australian Taxation office do NOT do business this way.

Got the same thing today too Lisa - a**hole called John Wright (yeah right from Mumbai no doubt).
Reported it to scamwatch. Trying to play on the fear factor

Automated voice recording, voicemail. ATO requesting call back. Threatening legal action.

I had this call happen just recently. It was a computerised voice basically about the same thing. I was very nervous having just lodged my Tax.. cheeky bastards. It went on saying that I had a criminal fraud tag against my name and I had to reply back to them or else I'd have my case brought to the Magistrates Court etc etc.

Indian that says he is from the taxation department. Says that I owe money to taxation department, then proceeds with threats of a $75000 fine, and possible jail time. SCAM!!!

Just received a call from this number that it was from the ATO and my name was linked to fraud, failure to call back was against the law. I did not call back.

we got a recorded message saying that we had to call this number back as it was the ATO and they have important information. Some sort of scam obviously.

Had a call from this number as well. Since it went to voicemail I was left with a recorded computer-generated message in poor English saying to call back the ATO for a Tatts' offer. All signs point to scam.

Agent Tom Black called from the "Australian Tax Office" its scammers.....

This is a scam do not call. they told me there were outstanding warrants for me.......

I had a similar call. A heavily accented man (Indian) claiming to be from the ATO called me to tell me they were starting immediate court action against me over an unpaid tax bill of $3,945. They wanted me to pay immediately to avoid court action. When i said i'd rather go to court he hung up immediately. The funniest part of the call was the fact that we said his name was Jack Austin - It was funny because his heavy Indian accent was so at odds with a name like Jack Austin.

Robo call calmed to be from ATO with evidence of tax fraud & I needed to call them back. That is not the way the ATO works.

Big Scam claiming there's an arrest warrant from the ATO and you need to settle out of court. Have a giggle and hang up.

I received a call from the same number also claiming to be from the tax office. This person said there was a tax complaint and needed to be dealt with immediately. When I asked for a number to call back and said that I'm not prepared to discuss it over the phone he threatened court action and hung up

call from australian tax office???, he said you owe $5,000 and if you hang up you will be in jail, repeated this numerous times and I hung, he rang back and left this number. ummmm i dont think so SCAMMER!

Just had a call from the number today. Claimed to be John Mclain(die hard movies).
Told me a warrant was out for my arrest for fraud and i would be arrested. He gave me case file numbers, his employee numbers etc. When i questioned him on the facts and the gaps in his story he said"sh*t happens" and hung up!

This is a very very elaborate scam and quite honestly had my blood pumping at first, and is clearly designed to use the fear factor first and foremost.
Supposedly there was a criminal complaint lodged against me for defrauding the ATO between 2008 and 2012 where I supposedly deliberately defrauded by the very precise amount of $3,850.00. He quoted Section blah blah sub section blah blah and it all sounds very very above board until he mentioned Sherrifs from the local County and basically what sounded very much like American legal system rather than Australian.
The Indian guy who claimed his name was John Wright (yeah right) was ATO Employee No (03) 8181 8258 (coincidentally the last 4 digits are my birthdate) and it was Case No VI643219. They claim is they sent me 3 letters and gave very specific dates and days of the weeks the letters were sent and that someone had attended the house but found no-one in attendance.
Interestingly he asked me not to interrupt (as obviously he couldn't read the bullsh*t of the screen and answer questions at the same time LOL).
I let him ramble on whilst googling the telephone number nd found a similar complaint against that phone number claiming the person was entitled to a huge refund. This was on the Reverseaustralia website which traces back telephone numbers.
So we got to a point where I think he was about to ask if I was prepared to pay to make this go away I decided enough was enough and told him it was the most precise and elaborate scam I had ever heard of however the phone number was registered with scamwatch and to bugger off !
Waiting the 45 minutes for the guy from the Sherrifs department to come around and arrest me still........

I just got same number and the Indian said he was from LEGAL DEPARTMENT of the ATO and there was a legal case taken out by the ATO and that there was a problem of $3850 where I had defrauded the ATO. Indian guys name was John Wright .
