A robot like voice left a message said it was the crime division of the ATO and that I needed to drop everything and call (02) 6100 3006. I looked up the real number for the tax office and called that they verified that it was a scam.

Something should be done about this scam. Claiming to be ATO will give there supposed Government identification threaten to freeze your bank accounts take possession of all your assets if you don't agree to finalize the supposed outstanding debt a warrant will be issued and the local police will be alerted. All crap! Please don't be fooled and give them no personal information.

I have had 2 calls in a time period within a few hours today with the same pre recorded message about a tax debt - used 2 different ph no's - Both times just hung up. This is the second time they've tried as I had this scam about 6 months ago - one would think they are pretty stupid as they didn't succeed the first time.

A friend experienced same type of phone call today. He rang his accountant to confirm they had not received any information to the effect there was a warrant out for tax evasion. His accountant advised him appears to be a scam - his ATO affairs are all in order.

I dared call them back, some fellow with an indian accent - when I questioned him he couldn't tell me the postal address for the so called ATO that he supposedly represented....funny as! I called him out in their little scam and hung up. Highly satisfying!

Had a call yesterday from this number and very much in line with comments made by others.....but this time advising me there was a personal arrest warrant out for nonpayment of an ATO tax bill !!! This was the first I had heard of any outstanding tax ... in fact I am currently expecting a refund !!! so I am just happily and unconcernedly hanging around waiting for the police to arrive, but feel certain this won't be happening any time soon !!! ....please be very careful if you get ANY call from this number

Received a call from this number to my home phone several days ago with a message from the ATO stating a case number and to respond immediately to the number given or legal action would be undertaken. Today received a call to my mobile which went to message bank - stating tax avoidance that paperwork had been sent out and return unsigned and a warrant for my arrest would forthcoming unless I called immediately. I will be interested to what the next part of the scam is.

received a SMS from the above number. Yes a SMS! It reads; -------------------------------------------------------- To inform you that your account has been marked clean for tax avoidance. Paperwork sent to your registered address is also returned back unsigned and undelivered. --------------------------------------------------------------
certainly a different approach.

This is the 3rd time i have been called by this scam from the ato regarding tax avoidance - they sound legit as they know your address, date of birth etc saying they have supplied details etc to your address. I called it bullsh*t, the indian guy then asked if i had legal representation, i said no as i wouldn't need it, as i have paid my tax, he then threatened to have someone at my address in 4 hours arrest me - called police, who confirmed a scam, said if someone does happen to turn up - call the police. But is a scam had accountant ring ato as well.

Definite scam. "Jack Austin" (who indeed sounded Indian) provided a slather of legal jargon and threatened legal action if I don't settle a debt I had with the Australian Tax Office. I told him that the situation didn't "feel" right and that I would like to see evidence. He claimed that information was sent in writing 3 times (provided my address to me - scary), I stated I had not seen any of this and he replied that he could no longer send further correspondance as the system doesn't allow it. As he asked for my credit card details to settle the debt I told him I would have to go get it, so I put the phone on mute and searched the internet for the name and number. Thankfully this is one of the pages I saw. I then returned to the call and told him I had discovered through the internet that he was trying to scam me and I was prepared to take my chances with legal proceedings. I then phoned the ATO who confirmed there was no debt amount. Next step is notifying the police. Beware, as far as scams go this is a pretty well thought out and legitimate sounding one.

Just an update, yesterday this guy called me from this number and this morning I received a call from the (02) 6100 3008. This time I let it go to the message bank and of course the good old scam with the robotic recording and the ATO threats with the call back instructions. This guy is so stupid, he does not even record where he has failed with his scam and tried to call again. Looks like they will roll the numbers after a few days of trying.
